Lakkotrypis: Cyprus Gas to Aid EU Energy Supply

Cyprus may soon become an integral part of a new chain of energy supply to the European UnionCyprus may soon become an integral part of a new chain of energy supply to the European Union, Minister of Energy Yiorgos Lakkotrypis has affirmed. Addressing the EU Energy Council meeting in Brussels on Thursday, the Minister explained that there is some 1,600 bcm of natural gas ready for exploration in the Eastern Mediterranean area. These natural resources may be utilized so as to alter the sources of supply of energy for the European Union; indeed, considering that the EU consumed some 400 bcm in 2014, it is clear that the region's resources are equipped to support this. Cyprus, he stressed, stands ready to contribute to the further development of the region's energy issue, while its exemplary relations with EU states may serve to facilitate cooperation in processing and transporting natural gas extracted from both its own and neighboring gas fields. Lakkotrypis welcomed the European Commission's commitment to creating an Energy Union, re-engineering the energy market, and examining new regulation on the Energy Labelling of Products.
