Countries around the world have been exchanging and hosting foreign Ambassadors since the 15thcentury and their role in today’s globalised, shrinking world is as important as it ever was. While a key responsibility of the Ambassador is to provide assistance and, where needed, protection to his/her own citizens abroad, each country’s highest representative is expected to promote friendly relations with the host nation and, increasingly, to encourage and promote trade between it and his/her own. Ambassadors to Cyprus are also in a position to offer a different perspective on our country’s problems while, at the same time, gaining a better insight into how both local issues and those concerning their own homeland are viewed by Cypriots and other residents of the island.
