Larnaca Municipality will be voting this coming week on whether to grant a six-month extension to operations of international energy companies from the town’s port.
According to In Cyprus, the outcome is expected to be negative, despite a call to the contrary by French giant Total which plans to carry out a drill within Cyprus’ Exclusive Economic Zone in September. Insiders argue that the negative vote – prompted by public pressure in view of May’s parliamentary elections – will be a blow to the town’s economic future, while the government has decided to keep its distance.
