Cyprus issue, US ties and cooperation with US and Israel at President's meeting with AIPAC

Developments in the Cyprus Problem, the situation in the Eastern Mediterranean and the wider Middle East, Cyprus-US relations, and cooperation between Cyprus, Israel and the US were among the issues discussed at a meeting between President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides and the leadership of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) at the Presidential Palace.

AIPAC is an American pro-Israel lobbying group that advocates for policies strengthening the U.S.–Israel relationship.

According to a statement by the Presidency, during the 21 October meeting between President Christodoulides and the organisation’s leadership, headed by outgoing AIPAC President Dr Bernard Kaminetsky and President-elect Yehuda Neuberger, the two sides expressed their willingness to further strengthen relations between the Republic of Cyprus and the US and Israel, as well as to accelerate efforts to enhance the 3+1 mechanism.

AIPAC highlighted its continued support for Cyprus-related issues in the US, while views were exchanged on the situation in the Eastern Mediterranean and the wider Middle East.

The President of the Republic also briefed the delegation on the current state of the Cyprus problem and on President Christodoulides’ efforts to resume negotiations from where they left off at Crans-Montana.

According to the statement, following the meeting with the organisation’s leadership, an expanded meeting was held with all members of the delegation, during which President Christodoulides delivered an address and answered questions on matters of mutual interest.

During their stay in Cyprus, members of the delegation also attended a ceremony in Nicosia honouring Jewish refugees and children born between 1946 and 1949 at the former British Military Hospital in Cyprus
