Panayiotis Pourgourides appointed new Head of EU Commission Representation in Cyprus

The European Commission has announced the appointment of Panayiotis Pourgourides as the new Head of the European Commission Representation in Nicosia, following the College of Commissioners in Brussels.

In his new role, Pourgourides will officially represent the European Commission in Cyprus under the political authority of President Ursula von der Leyen. The exact date for assuming his duties will be announced at a later time, it is added.

According to the European Commission, Pourgourides has deep knowledge of European affairs and brings extensive experience from the fields of international and European politics. Throughout his career, he has developed strong skills in strategic analysis, stakeholder relations management, policy coordination, and diplomacy—qualities that are critical for effectively representing the Commission in Cyprus, it is added.

Prior to his appointment, Pourgourides had served as a Member of the Cabinet of Commissioner Stella Kyriakides during her tenure at the European Commission. Previously, he worked in the House of Representatives of the Republic of Cyprus and also served as Secretary of the Cypriot Parliamentary Delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.

According to the Commission, the selection of Pourgourides "reflects confidence in his ability to manage complex communication and political environments, build bridges of cooperation with institutions, political stakeholders, and civil society, and promote the EU’s priorities in Cyprus. His deep understanding of European institutions and his experience in national and European political arenas make him particularly well-suited for this position".
