Victoria Nuland, the Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs at the US State Department, is expected to visit to Cyprus in mid-October, the Cyprus Mail reports.
According to well-informed sources in Washington, the date most likely for Nuland to visit would be October 14. The same Cyprus News Agency sources also reveal that the aim of the visit is to express support on behalf of the US administration to the intensive settlement talks that are taking place between President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci.
Influential members of the community in the US with contacts to the State Department said they received assurances that the US official would not exert pressure of any kind.
Initial plans also involved trips to Ankara and Athens by Nuland, but do not seem likely at this stage.
